Winter storm hits D.C., Philadelphia and New York while poised to slam Boston

A powerful and complex winter storm is moving through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, and is forecast to bring over a foot of snow to eastern Pennsylvania, southern New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Meanwhile, the big cities of Washington and Philadelphia have sat on the dividing line between precipitation types, and have endured a messy mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain as the storm intensified near the Mid-Atlantic coast.

A coating to a couple of inches of snow fell around Washington Wednesday morning before changing to sleet and icy rain. Precipitation could switch back to snow briefly before ending after midnight.
In Philadelphia, about 6 inches fell Wednesday afternoon but changed to sleet and freezing rain early in the evening. The wintry mix could change back to snow before ending in the predawn hours Thursday.
Heavy snow moved into New York City Wednesday evening which could see its most accumulation since 2018. The Weather Service is predicting one foot, most of it falling overnight.
The Poconos and Catskills could see blockbuster totals up to two feet, with snow falling at the rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour Wednesday night.
In Southern New England, 12 to 18 inches are forecast in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, including Boston, most of it falling Wednesday night and Thursday.
