2021 California RNG Fuel Usage Report
California fleets fueled with in-state bio-CNG continued to be negative for 2021, as illustrated in the “2021 California RNG Fuel Usage Report” produced by the NGVAmerica (Natural Gas Vehicles for America) and the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas, in partnership with CNGVC and the California Natural Gas Vehicle Partnership.
Renewable natural gas (RNG) use as a transportation fuel has increased in California by 163% over the last five years and in 2021 alone, RNG use resulted in the displacement of 2.78 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). This is similar to removing 600,145 gasoline powered cars off California roadways for one year.
This proves that biomethane sourced from dairy digesters, local landfills, wastewater treatment plants, commercial food waste facilities, and agricultural operations provides the most affordable and proven solution to
decarbonize medium- and heavy-duty transportation today.
